Product image guidelines.

Guidelines for adding images

When you create a product listing, you should include at least one product image. The first picture you add will be your product listing’s main image, and any additional images will become product gallery images.

The technical requirements for all images are as follows:

  • Accepted image formats are: JPEG (.jpeg/.jpg), TIFF (.tif/.tiff), GIF (.gif) and PNG (.png).
  • Image dimensions should be at least 1000 pixels or larger, in width or height.
  • Maximum image size is 2 MB (we recommend compressing them using free online tools before uploading).
  • Images should be in sRGB or CMYK color mode.
  • File names should match the product title, followed by a fullstop and the appropriate file extension (eg. BunchOfBananas.png). Dashes or additional characters in the filename will prevent your image from being uploaded.

Main images

Main product images should comply with the following standards:

  • Pure white backgrounds are preferred.
  • The image must be a professional photograph, or the cover art, of the product being sold. Drawings or illustrations of the product are not allowed.
  • The image should only contain the exact product that is for sale in that specific product listing. No additional products should be in the image.
  • The product should be clearly visible (not blurry), well lit with realistic colour.
  • The full product must be in the image frame – no part of the product should be cropped or missing from the image.
  • Basic image editing is allowed, but this should not include filters or emojis.
  • The image must not contain additional text, graphics, or inset images.
  • Pornographic, nude and offensive materials are not allowed.
  • Images copied from other websites or internet searches are not allowed, unless the owner of the image has given you permission.

Additional images

Additional photos (gallery images) should comply with the following standards:

  • The image must relate to, or must be of, the product being sold.
  • The product should be clearly visible (not blurry), well lit with realistic colour.
  • Additional products or objects are allowed to help demonstrate the use, or the scale of the product for sale.
  • Try to include images of all sides of your product with detailed close-ups.
  • Cropped or close-up images are allowed.
  • Backgrounds and environments are allowed.
  • Text and demonstrative graphics are allowed.
  • Pornographic and offensive materials are not allowed.
  • Images copied from other websites or internet searches are not allowed, unless the owner of the image has given you permission.

Any activity that does not follow our guidelines could result in a range of actions, including for example: canceling listings, hiding or demoting all listings from search results, buying or selling restrictions, or account suspension.

Creating your own guidelines

Create your own product photography guidelines as well! Once you have mastered your product images and established a style for your brand, take the time to create your own clear photography guidelines for the next time that you (or someone else) takes images of your products. This will help your business maintain a sense of style and consistency.

Document each part of the photoshoot, such as the background/s, the lighting used, the angles and even the distance between the camera and product/s. Because your product images are basically brand ambassadors for your business, it will be totally worth it! This guide will save you time and money in the long run.

Warning:
It may be considered copyright infringement if you copy and use images or text without permission from the owner or creator.
