Types of Products.

Once you have created your product listing and have been redirected to the edit product page, there is an option to select a product type. You can select from the following types of products: ↓ Simple products, ↓ Variable products, ↓ Virtual products, ↓ Downloadable products, ↓ Group products and ↓ External/Affiliate Products.

Note: The product type can’t be selected when creating a new product, as the default product type for new products is “simple”. To change the product type, first create a new product and navigate to the edit product page, or click an existing product listing to edit it.

Simple products

As you may have guessed by the name, these products are simple, have no variants and most likely require shipping. They are single and standalone products, which do not require any other information to define different variants, such as sizes, colours or styles. These are the most commonly used types of products, and are the default product type used when creating products. For example, a book.

Variable products

A variable product is a product that has different attributes (such as sizes, colours or styles), each of which may have a different SKU, price or stock quantity. A product variation is created by combining multiple attributes. These variations are useful if you would like to sell a T-shirt that is available in 5 different colours and sizes, each with different prices, for example. Adding the T-shirt as a variable product will enable you to add all of the colours, sizes and prices you need. You can create as many custom attributes as you like, such as material used or stitching style. How to create a variable product:

    1. Log into your ↗ Vendor dashboard.
    2. Click the Sell Grocery & Products tab on the left menu.
    3. Then click on the Edit button on the product listing that you want to convert to a variable product.
    4. Select Variable from the product type drop-down menu.
    5. Scroll down to the “Attribute and Variation” section.

    1. Use the drop-down menu to select an existing attribute, or select Custom attribute if you need custom variations and attributes of your own.
    2. Click Add attribute.
    3. If you selected an existing attribute, select the Values (attributes) from the drop-down menu. If you selected custom attribute, enter the variation Name and Values. For example, if you wrote “colour” as your attribute, type all of the available colours as values, such as red, blue or purple.
    4. Tick the “Used for variations” checkbox for each attribute.

    2. Wait a few seconds for the variation panel to display, then select Add variation from the drop-down menu and click go. Repeat this step to create as many variations as you need.
    3. Select the appropriate values from the drop-down menus for each attribute to create a variation, such as “large” “blue” shirts.

  1. Click Save variations.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save product.

Tip: You can create as many variations as you like! They can be vague such as “any colour”, or specific such as “blue”. If you select “any colour” you will set the price for all colours at once, and if you select “blue” you will set the price for just the blue item. This is extremely helpful if you have multiple attributes that require different prices. For example, you could choose to offer all “large” “blue” shirts at X price, while all “medium” “blue” shirts at Y price. Or you could choose to simplify things by selecting “any colour” shirt of “any size” is Z price. If you do create multiple variations, be sure to triple check your pricing. And remember, although you can add as many variations and attributes as you like, try to avoid confusing the customer! Have you ever heard of choice overload? Keep things as simple as possible, while still providing the customer with options.

Virtual products

A virtual product is one that doesn’t require shipping. Ticking the “Virtual” checkbox on the product page will disable all shipping related fields, such as shipping dimensions. A virtual product will also not trigger the shipping calculator in the shopping cart and checkout. Any service you provide would be a good example of a virtual product. Simple products and variable products can both be virtual products. For a simple product, you will find the virtual product option checkbox right underneath the “Product Type” drop-down menu.

For a variable product, you will find the virtual product option checkbox for each variation located in the “Attribute & Variation” section.

Note: If you list a product as a virtual product, then you will not find any shipping options for that product. This is because digital products do not require shipping.

Downloadable products

A downloadable product is one that customers download online. Ticking the “Downloadable” checkbox on the product page will activate additional fields where you can provide a downloadable file. After a successful purchase, customers are given a link to a downloadable file in their order notification email. This is suitable for digital albums, computer software or digital photos, for example. Simple products and variable products can both be downloadable products. For a simple product, you will find the downloadable product option checkbox right underneath the “Product Type” drop-down menu.

Group products

A group product is a parent product that groups multiple child products together. Basically, it is a collection of related products. This is useful for Vendors that want to sell simple products that are bundled together, such as a basic lounge suite that includes a single couch, a two seater couch and an ottoman. Adding these items as a grouped product will display all of these items on a single product page (instead of individually) which is convenient for the customer. To create a grouped product, first you need to create a parent group product, then create the child products, and lastly, link the parent and child products together. Step One: How to create a parent group product:

  1. Log into your ↗ Vendor dashboard.
  2. Click the Sell Grocery & Products tab on the left menu.
  3. Then click on the Add New Products button in the top right corner.
  4. Add all of the relevant info, such as product name, description, category and images.
  5. Click Create product.
  6. On the new page that loads, select Group Product from the product type drop-down menu.
  7. Add any other relevant info.
  8. Click Save product.

Note: Since grouped products are parent products, no pricing options displayed when editing the grouped product – the prices are set on each of the child product pages.

Step Two: How to create a child product:

  1. Log into your ↗ Vendor dashboard.
  2. Click the Sell Grocery & Products tab on the left menu.
  3. Create a new product listing using the Add New Product button, or click on an existing product listing to edit it.
  4. Add any relevant info, such as product price, description and images.
  5. Once you are on the edit product page, select the appropriate product type from the drop-down menu, such as Simple product or Variable product. The product type should be based on the product itself, regardless of whether it is a grouped product.
  6. Use the drop-down menu to select the same product category as the parent product, such as Supermarket or Grocery. Because this is the child product, the category of the child product must be the same as the parent (group) product.
  7. If you would like the child product to only be purchased as a group product and not individually, then you need to hide the child product from the store’s catalogue. You can do this by scrolling down to the “Other Options” section and set the visibility to hidden using the drop-down menu. This will display the child product only when the parent group product is viewed, however, a customer will not be able to find the individual child product in your Store. Learn more about visibility here.
  8. Click Save product.

  2. Click the Sell Grocery & Products tab on the left menu.

  7. Click Save product.

Tip: Use External/Affiliate products with caution. Our aim is to create a vibrant CuteMesh.com community and sending customers to other websites is counter-intuitive. Instead, we suggest focusing on your brand and creating your own awesome store on CuteMesh.com that your customers will love!
