Reducing shipping costs

Shipping can get expensive! Here are our quick tips for reducing shipping costs:

Keep shipments small and simple

Because the cost of shipping usually depends on the size and/or weight of the package, try to keep it as small as possible, wherever possible. As a result, you (as well as your customer) will save on shipping costs. As suggested in our packaging do’s and don’ts, don’t use excessive protective packaging – only use what’s required to safely deliver your product to the customer. Not only does excessive packaging increase the cost of shipping by increasing the weight, it will also increase your customer’s level of frustration when trying to open the package… and it’s not very environmentally friendly!

Compare shipping service rates

When it comes to what company you will use to ship your products, you should carefully compare all of the options available to you. Important factors to consider are: shipping costs, tracking, delivery times and guarantees. Some of the larger and popular courier companies are reliable due to their years of experience and expertise, however, some of the smaller local companies might offer better rates or shipping time frames. Weigh out the pros and cons of each company, and compare quotes before selecting your service provider.

Print your own shipping labels

If you’re a new business, it may be tempting to buy every gadget available, such as a specialised printer for custom labels, inserts or stickers. While this may be a worthwhile consideration in future when you have a high number of orders, it is not necessary in the beginning. Simply use a regular printer for labels, inserts, stickers or other items. If you don’t have a printer, you could consider printing in bulk (for a discount) at a local printing shop, but it is generally cheaper to print these items yourself. However, avoid buying or printing shipping labels at your local post office or courier company because these are usually the most expensive places to do so! For this purpose, it may be a good idea to consider using shipping software that assists with shipping labels.

Buy your packaging in bulk ahead of time

Instead of buying a box for an order after it has been placed, buy your packaging in bulk ahead of time. This can be done at any large packaging supplier, whether they have an online shop or not. Although, purchasing online can be a huge time saver! Buying in bulk usually means discounted prices (yay!) and buying ahead of time means you will be well prepared for all incoming orders. Don’t leave things to the last minute. It is better to be organised and ensure that you live up to your handling time.

Outsource your top sellers to a fulfillment partner

As suggested in our shipping tools and tips, outsourcing a fulfillment service (such as ShipStation) can help automate your shipping service. Managing all of your shipping in-house can quickly become complicated and difficult, especially as your store grows. Leveraging the benefits of a large fulfillment company can result in consistent and reliable deliveries. This is why it is a good idea to use a fulfillment partner, at least for your top selling products, as it will likely improve your customer experience.
